Pardons and Employment Support

Having a criminal record can be a barrier for many, particularly in respect to employment. Many individuals look to pursuing a pardon as a way to remove this barrier. A pardon can limit the problems faced by individuals looking to find meaningful employment. The John Howard Society of York Region has teamed up with JVS Toronto to assist individuals in removing these barriers to employment so that they can contribute to society in a significant way.

A Pardon is an order that keeps a person's criminal record separate and apart from other criminal records. It does not erase a criminal record. Pardons allow people who have made positive life changes to be freed from the many of the negative impacts of having a criminal record. People have the right not to be discriminated against because of a criminal conviction for which they have been pardoned.

The National Parole Board is responsible for issuing, granting, denying and revoking pardons. If the pardon is related to a sexual offence, your file will be 'flagged' in the RCMP record system and revealed on a vulnerable sector check.

If you are unsure whether you qualify to apply for a pardon, have questions, or would like to receive support in completing the application process, you can contact the John Howard Society of York Region at 905-895-9942. You may also email inquiries to admin@johnhowardyorkregion.on.ca
