About Us
Our Mission:
"Effective, just and humane responses to crime and its causes"
What does the John Howard Society do?
In Ontario, there are 19 John Howard Society Affiliates which individually address a wide range of client needs, including family issues, employment, housing, financial problems, substance abuse, cognitive-behavioural change and skill deficits. Many of our affiliates provide employment related services as a part of primary crime prevention services to youth and even the general public, and others as part of the comprehensive reintegration support services offered to ex-prisoners.
Reducing crime and the root causes of crime are important aspects of our organization's overall goal. Each year, thousands of people make a new start after imprisonment. Our goal is to help clients succeed at becoming law abiding and contributing citizens. We know that helping clients find connections to their community, such as housing and stable employment, are instrumental in their successful reintegration to society. Stable employment will not only provide income, but also the opportunity to be productive, develop networks of support, and to build knowledge and self esteem. Therefore, we invest in increased community safety by providing meaningful reintegration support services to those being released from institutions.
Over the years, the John Howard Society has received a number of inquiries and requests for service from community members and organizations in York Region. In many cases, surrounding JHS Affiliates have been able to respond,. However, as the Region grew, it was becoming very difficult for surrounding affiliates to provide direct service to members of the York Region communities, in addition to their own community. Thus, we are proud to announce the establishment of our new Affiliate: The John Howard Society of York Region!
The John Howard Society of York Region not only works with those at risk of criminal justice involvement, those in custody and released from custody, but also with families and children who are affected by incarceration.
If you or someone you know is experiencing conflict with the law, feel free to contact us. It is our commitment to help connect individuals from York Region with the support and services they need, in order to be a happy, healthy, contributing members of the community.
